Origin diversity brings differentiated products to consumers, reduces supply risk from climate challenges, and affords a livelihood for coffee farmers in many countries. However, that livelihood is threatened by climate change and low productivity - which makes it particularly difficult for farmers to cope during low price environments. Agricultural research and development is a key tool that contributes towards multiple goals - economic viability for farmers, differentiated quality in the market, and reduced risk across multiple coffee origins. This talk will summarize the perspectives of the global coffee industry echoed in WCR's global consultation conducted earlier this year, and how agricultural research is a key driver for long term economic and environmental sustainability in coffee.
